| Woodlawn bioreactor update |
Last September the waste and bioreactor facility at the old Woodlawn mine began accepting waste from the North Sydney Region of Councils. Contrary to expectations, the waste being received is not just putrescible, organic and green waste, but is comingled municipal household waste. To date, the facility has received almost 250,000 tonnes of waste. The gas extraction for power generation is not yet fully operational. Collex has applied to extend its license from 400,000 tonnes to 500,000 tonnes per year. Given that the waste being taken is not just putrescible, any extension of the license would raise serious doubts about the sustainability of the facility, which was originally intended to have a functional life of 40-50 years.
