Welcome to the Canberra Environment and Sustainability Resource Centre
Sustainability has become the single most important driving force for human development. With a growing population in a dry region, the ACT needs to consider all aspects of our development to ensure that we constantly balance our needs as a dynamic society with those of our natural environment. Our aim is to work with all sectors of the ACT and regional community towards sustainable development that will see Canberra grow and prosper while keeping the bush in the Bush Capital.
"The future is not something we live for, it's something we create" Ian Lowe
Do you need to dispose of any electronic equipment ?
Read this first:
The ACT Government is currently advising people to dispose of old TVs, including those with CRT monitors, in landfill. Furthermore it is charging you for the privilege. Please do not take your old TVs or any other e-waste to any ACT Government waste facility (Mugga Lane or Mitchell)!
CRT monitors contain mercury, lead, cadmium, barium and phosphor which are toxic and which will contaminate soil and water.
CRT monitors are classifed as hazardous waste by the Australian government.
Most other Australian jurisdictions banned e-waste to landfill years ago but the ACT is actively encouraging it and is providing false and misleading information by assuring the public it is safe.
Safe e-waste disposal: E-waste can be safely disposed of at Renewable Processes (Parkwood - adjacent to the old Belconnen landfill site) where it will be stripped down, the metals recovered and the rest recycled. PGM Refiners also fully recover and recycle e-waste. They collect from the ACT - contact them for details. Both these companies will take e-waste free of charge. Both are using environmentally sound process and neither will send any component to landfill or overseas (illegal under the international Basel Convention). The Environment Centre is a collection point for electric and electronic cabling for recycling. Ignore the ACT government's misinformation and keep e-waste out of landfill.
